    CYPRUS IS CELEBRATING ITS SIXTH CHRISTMAS SINCE THE UNITED NATIONS CEASEFIRE HALTED THE FIGHTING BETWEEN THE GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES IN AUGUST, 1964. THE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS HAVE TRANSFORMED THE STREETS OF THE CAPITAL, NICOSIA AND ONE OF THE GAYEST IS LEDRA STREET .... THE INFAMOUS "MURDER MILE" DURING THE HOSTILITIES.

    CHRISTMAS SPENDING ON THE ISLAND THIS YEAR COULD BE AN ALL-TIME HIGH. THERE HAS BEEN A BIG DEMAND ON AGENCIES HANDLING CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR CYPRIOTS WITH RELATIONS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. THOUSANDS HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THE SERVICE AND PARCELS ARE PILED HIGH IN THE COLLECTION CENTRES.

    ON TUESDAY (DECEMBER 16), THE PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS, ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, OPENED A CHARITY BAZAAR FOR THE POOR AT NICOSIA'S LEADING HOTEL, THE LEDRA PALACE. IT WAS ORGANISED BY THE CITY'S CATHOLIC COMMUNITY.

    ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF THE ISLAND'S POPULATION CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS. THE MEMBERS OF THE TURKISH COMMUNITY, MOST OF THEM MUSLIMS, ARE PRESENTLY CELEBRATING IDD-EL-FITR, WHICH FOLLOWS THE FAST OF RAMADAN.
