  • Description

In Mauritania, a new technical training centre has been opened to provide skilled workers ready to go into the jobs. It will allow students to study at home, instead of in other countries.

SYNOPSIS: The centre aims to supply the country's skilled tradesman and middle management staff from within Mauritania. It was officially opened by President Moktar Ould Daddah.

Mauritania's Minister of State for National Economy, Sidi Ould Shaikh Abdallahi, read the opening address. He said there was a lack of skilled workers, and facilities were needed to train professionals that could go straight from the centre into skilled jobs. It was the first of three such centres.

Students at this centre will be trained in metal-work skills. After spending an average of three years, working five days a week, they will go into operations including oil refining, and oil and mineral exploration. Accommodation is provided at the centre.

This first centre can accommodate 240 students. The other two, also being set up by the National Society, will provide training electrical trades and in accounting. Because of the importance of Mauritania's industrial sector, students are encouraged to choose technical careers.
