M. Jean-Marie Kone, Mali Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, arrived in Algeria yesterday at the start of an official visit to the country, bringing with him a personal message from Lieutenant Moussa Traore, chairman of the Mali National Liberation Committee, to Algerian President Houari Boumedienne. He travelled from Mali on the regular Soviet airline service which operates between Bamako and Moscow.
At Dar el Beida Airport, Algiers, M. Kone was greeted by the Algerian Foreign Minister, M. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the Malian ambassador to Algeria, and a number of Algerian officials and foreign envoys.
After inspecting a guard of honour, Mr. Kone and M. Bouteflika went to the airport building to begin the discussion which will form an important part of M. Kone's programme.
The two Foreign Ministers are to consult on matters of mutual interest to their countries, which have a long common border in the Sahara desert.
M. Kone is the first Mali Minister to pay an official visit to Algeria since former Mali President Modibo Keita was ousted in a coup last November. He has made extensive foreign tours since he was appointed Foreign Minister to the military regime of Lieutenant Moussa Traore.
In December he visited Paris, Moscow, Brussels and Bonn, and in March was nominated to head a goodwill mission to Washington. He has also visited several West African capitals with the object of explaining his country's policies.
