  • Description

A NUMBER OF RECEPTIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA'S MAIN CITIES WERE HELD YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO MARK THE BIRTHDAY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH. THE RECEPTIONS HELD IN CAPE TOWN, JOHANNESBURG, DURBAN AND PORT ELIZABETH WERE ATTENDED BY GUESTS OF MANY RACES. NO SOUTH AFRICAN CABINET MINISTERS OR OFFICIALS ATTENDED.

INVITATIONS WERE SENT TO A WIDE SECTION OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN POPULATION, IRRESPECTIVELY OF COLOUR OR CREED. IT HAD EARLIER BEEN ANNOUNCED BY DR VERWOERD, THE SOUTH AFRICAN PRIME MINISTER, THAT HIS GOVERNMENT WOULD NOT BE REPRESENTED AT THE MULTI-RACIAL RECEPTIONS. AND NO INVITATION WERE ISSUED.

AMONG THE PERSONALITIES TO ATTEND THE RECEPTION IN JOHANNESBURG, GIVEN BY MR JAMES CURRIE, THE CONSUL, WAS THE MAYOR OF JOHANNESBURG, MR JAFFE, AND HIS WIFE.

THE TOAST TO THE QUEEN WAS DRUNK IN SOFT DRINKS BECAUSE SOUTH AFRICA'S LIQUOR LAWS FORBID WHITES AND NON-WHITES TO DRINK TOGETHER.
