  • Description

Relatives waited several hours at Beirut Airport in the Lebanon for the return of the Lebanese airliner and its passengers, hijacked over Cyprus on Thursday night, and forced to land at Tel Aviv Airport in Israel.

The hijacker--who said he was Mohammed Ahmed Altoumi, a Libyan from Tripoli who was 37 years old--was remanded in custody for fifteen days by the Tel Aviv magistrate. Altoumi told the court that he was a bachelor and worked in buying and selling. He had never before been to Israel, and he had no relatives there. He had told newsmen that his intentions--which he claimed were good--were to prove that not all Arabs were enemies of Israel.

At the end of the five hour hijack drama, the hundred and nine passengers, and ten crew members, flew to Beirut from Tel Aviv, leaving the hijacker, Altoumi, in Israeli custody.
