Background: A contingent of Dutch troops sailed, Sept 30, from the Hook of Holland to strengthen the Netherlands New Guinea force. At the dockside to see them off was Minister of Defence S.H.Visser. For security reasons no details were given as to the number of men departing or the names of their units.
For the same reasons it is not known where the men will land once they arrive in New Guinea. Observers noted that there were at least several hundred men on the dockside before they were ordered aboard. It is thought that they are mainly infantrymen. Most of the men's relatives were at the dockside to see them off, to the music of a military band.
In April 27, the Dutch Defence Ministry announced they would strengthen the defence of New Guinea with reinforcements of jet fighters, anti-aircraft artillery and Army units. The statement said the defence action was taken due to the aggressive elements in Indonesian foreign policy.
