  • Description

The Government of Rachid Karami, which succeeds the Chemuon group, won a vote of confidence in the Lebanese Chamber of Deputies on October 17. Premier Karami gave a five minute speech on the Government's policies as dictated by President Chabeb's inaugural speech of September 23. He said that his Cabinet of four would work for peace, co-operation and trust within Lebanon itself. He described his Cabinet as one of National Salvation and appealed to his countrymen to forget the post.

The unity of the country, signified by the vote of confidence, amazon observers. The week-end before the country appeared to be on the brink of civil war and the five month conflict between Government and Opposition forces seems to have been forgotten. Terms are again running in the capital and nightclubs were informed that they could reopen on Monday, October 20. This would appear to indicate that the curfew on Beirut is in its death throes.
