    PORTUGUESE TROOPS, WHO HAD DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES IN ACTION IN ANGOLA AND MOZAMBIQUE, ON SATURDAY RECEIVED MILITARY DECORATIONS IN LISBON ON PORTUGAL'S NATIONAL DAY. THE SOLDIERS, OR RELATIVES OF DEAD SOLDIERS, RECEIVED EITHER THE MILITARY MEDAL OF VALOUR -- PORTUGAL'S HIGHEST MILITARY AWARD -- OR THE 'CRUZ GUERRA' -- THE WAR CROSS.

    THE DECORATIONS WERE PRESENTED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, DR. SALAZAR, AND PRESIDENT AMERICO TOMAZ. ALSO PRESENT AT THE CEREMONY, WERE HIGH-RANKING ARMY OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF THE PORTUGUESE GOVERNMENT.

    SOME OF THE AWARDS WERE MADE POSTHUMOUSLY, AND THE DECORATIONS WERE RECEIVED BY RELATIONS, AND IN ONE CASE, BY A YOUNG BOY ... WHOSE FATHER HAD DIED IN COMBAT.

    AFTER THE CEREMONY, A MARCH-PAST OF THE SOLDIERS WHO HAD RECEIVED DECORATIONS FOLLOWED. ALSO TAKING PART IN THE MARCH PAST WERE CADETS FROM MILITARY ACADEMIES AND DETACHMENTS OF MARINES AND AIRMEN.
