    AMERICA'S NINE NEW ASTRONAUTS WERE INTRODUCED TO THE PRESS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) AT THE NEW MANNED SPACECRAFT CENTRE AT HOUSTON, TEXAS. THE NINE, SELECTED AFTER SIX MONTHS OF GRUELLING TESTS, ARE JOINING THE ORIGINAL TEAM OR SEVEN IN AMERICA'S PROGRAMME TO LAND A MAN ON THE MOON IN THIS DECADE.

    THEY ARE: NEIL ARMSTRONG, 32, CIVILIAN TEST PILOT ON THE X-15 ROCKET AIRCRAFT PROGRAMME; MAJOR FRANK BORMAN, 34, AIR FORCE RESEARCH PILOT INSTRUCTORS; LIEUTENANT CHARLES CONRAD, 32, NAVAL OFFICER; LIEUTENANT-COMMANDER JAMES LOVELL, 34 NAVY OFFICER; LIEUTENANT CAPTAIN JAMES (MCDIVITT, 33; ELLIOTT SEE, 35, EXPERIMENTAL PILOT FOR GENERAL ELECTRIC; AIR FORCE CAPTAIN THOMAS STAFFORD, 32, AIR FORCE CAPTAIN EDWARD WHITE, 32; AND NAVY LIEUTENANT-COMMANDER JOHN YOUNG.

    ON AN AVERAGE, THEY ARE YOUNGER THAN THE ORIGINAL SET OF ASTRONAUTS, ALL HAVE COLLEGE DEGREES, ARE MARRIED, HAVE CHILDREN, AND SHARE WIDE FLYING EXPERIENCE IN JETS. THEY WILL REPORT FOR DUTY ON OCTOBER 1.
