  • Description

The Arabian Gulf state of Kuwait mourned on Saturday (24 March) when two Kuwaiti soldiers, killed during the border clash with Iraq on the previous Tuesday (20 March), were ceremonially buried.

Army officer Saud Fhaid Abdullah al-Sahli and Corporal Zaal Rumaih Battal al-Zuffairi fell while defending the Kuwaiti frontier post at Al-Samta.

At the head of the mourners, who gathered at the Governorate Headquarters before leading the funeral procession, was His Highness Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber, Kuwait's Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Other dignitaries included the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Khaled Saleh al-Gunaim, ministers, senior army officers, members of the diplomatic corps and the Mayor of Kuwait.

The coffins were borne through Kuwait Town by the dead soldiers' comrades in arms. In deference to the occasion all shops on the route closed their doors.

As the coffins were being carried, jet aircraft of the Kuwaiti Air Force flew low over the procession. The coffins were placed in two military vehicles at the outskirts of the town and conveyed to the cemetery. They were then carried in by Police and Army officers.

After the ceremonies the Minister of the Interior and of Defence, Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Salem al-Sabah, and relatives of the dead soldiers received the condolences of mourners.
