Background: The New York Cosmos team beat the Japanese national side in a match at Tokyo on November 10 which featured the last appearance in Japan of the former West German World Cup Captain, Franz Beckenbauer. Beckenbauer, who led the West German side to victory in the 1974 World Cup, has played in Japan several times and at the end of the match he was presented with flowers. 30,000 fans attended the game despite torrential rain. Japan, playing in white, kicked of and attacked hard but failed to break through the defences of the New York Cosmos, playing in blue. At half time neither team had scored, but ten minutes before the finish, Giorgio Chinaglia, the top goal scorer in the North American Soccer League, shot the ball into the net after the Cosmos gained possession in mid-field.
