Soon after flying into Saigon on Monday (13 Sept) on a four-day visit to South Vietnam, U.S. Presidential candidate George McGovern talked to reporters about his long-standing opposition to the American role in the Vietnam war.
On Tuesday, Democrat Senator McGovern, toured the U.S. army drug addiction centre at Cam Ranh Bay. and also addressed a meeting on prison conditions in South Vietnam.
At the meeting, in a Saigon Church, Mr McGovern was trapped for an hour by angry stone-throwing demonstrators, until released by police.
