  • Description

The three Australian-entered yachts in this year's Admiral's Cup showed a fine turn of speed and excellent handling during trials off Cowes near the Isle of Wight on Monday (July 16).

The three yachts, Ragamuffin, Apollo II and Gingko, spent a useful day for their debut in next weekend's 180-mile ocean race from Cowes to Dinard.

In an effort to regain the cup from Britain, the current title holder, the three middleweight Australian yachts are tipped to have their biggest challenge from The United States, which has entered two heavyweight yachts and one tiddler.

The series consists of the Channel race, two 35-mile races during Cowes week, and finally the 650-mile Fastnet Race.

SYNOPSIS: In choppy seas off Cowes near the Isle of Wight on Monday, the three Australian contenders for this year's Admiral's Cup showed a clean hull and a fine turn of speed and performance in a day of practice trials. Ragamuffin and Apollo-Two - part of the strong Australian challenge for the trophy - were carefully watched by observers as they made full use of a stiff north-westerly wind.

The three middle-weight Australian yachts....including the very fast Gingko...showed a formidable amount of muscle in the day-long trials. Some yachting experts say that with Australia's summer being upside down compared with the United Kingdom, they've been able to begin the trials with more experience than most. The first Australian Admiral's Cup team came to compete in Britain in Nineteen-Sixty-Five. Australia took the trophy in Nineteen-Sixty-Seven, from there it went to the United States, and its current holder is Britain.

The race series consists of the big Channel race, two thirty-five-mile races during the Cowes week, and finally the six-hundred-and-fifty-mile Fastnet race.
