  • Description

The Ghanaian Commissioner for Works and Housing, Mr Issifu Ali, on Tuesday (28 January) formally turned on a tap to start supplying water to the Asesewa area in Ghana's Eastern Region. The project -- undertaken by the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation -- cost 54-thousand new cedis (approx.GBP120-thousand sterling).

The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Regional Committee of Administration, Mr G.A. Dzansi, and tribal chiefs of the area. The chairman was Nene Azu Mate Kole, Koner of Manya Krobo.

Mr. Issifu Ali said that the Government's awareness of the economic importance of Asesewa had been amply demonstrated by the construction of the water supply. He said that a feeder-road pilot scheme had also been established for the Asesewa-Sekesua area, involving the construction of 107 miles (273.6 KM) of rural roads.

When the scheme was completed, he said, it would provide the area with a network of first-class feeder roads which should encourage farmers to increase their productivity and help ease the food situation in the country.
