  • Description

Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah and foreign delegates who attended the celebrations of Mauritania's tenth independence anniversary visited the important copper plant at Akjoujt on Friday (4 December).

The Foreign Minister of Mauritania, Hamdi Mouknass, wrote earlier in the week in his review of the first ten years of independence that Mauritania must continue to develop by attracting foreign investors and capital. It was due to foreign investment that the discovery of copper at Akjoujt could be exploited.

Shareholders of the Societe des mines de cuivre (Somina) include Charter Consolidated of London, France's Bureaux de Recherches geologiques et Minieres, as well as the Mauritanian government.

The town has experienced rapid growth recently due to the large copper deposits discovered there. The plant there is due to export its first copper concentrate next year and is planned to produce 4,000 tons a day from January onwards.

The President and his guests travelled by special bus to Akjoujt, 275 kilometres (170 miles) north of the capital, Nouakchott. The exploitation of copper has made the town the second most important mining town in Mauritania.
