  • Description

A public holiday was held in Uruguay on Wednesday (21 May) to allow a census to be taken. Government offices were closed and people were told to stay in their houses to be counted.

Shops and offices were closed and public transport stopped between early morning and late evening.

This enforced shut-down of the country allowed President Juan Maria Bordaberry a breathing space in his dispute with Armed Forces leaders.

They have criticised Government policy recently and had handed President Bordaberry a memorandum, which informed sources said criticised several aspects of Government policy. The crisis came to a head early this week when the President turned down a demand by military leaders to re-instate the Chairman of the National Meat Institute who he fired on Monday (19 May) for disobeying a Presidential order.

The population of Uruguay in July 1972 was 2,950,000.
