  • Description

Aircraft flying under Air American identification arrived in Phnom penh on Tuesday (12 September), carrying vital rice supplies for the capital.

The move followed last week's rioting in Phnom penh when soldiers looted markets at gunpoint. Rice supplies in the country have reached an all-time low. Communist forces have cut roads leading from the rice-growing areas and the capital is literally starving.

Even when there is rice available, the prices are often too high for the average citizen to afford.

Tuesday's airlifted supplies will be distributed by government officials in Phnom penh. Most of the rico was from the Untied States, although South Vietnam did make a token shipment by Air Cambodge. There were six Air America flights during the day, and more have been scheduled for later in the week.

The Americans have also pledged to supply rice in bulk by river convoy and by road if necessary.
