Background: Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ramasinghe Premadasa, who's in Singapore on a five day official visit, paid a courtesy call Thursday (23 August) on President Benjamin Sheares. The visit is aimed at improving economic cooperation between the two countries.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Premadasa arrived Wednesday (22 August) after a week-long visit to China.
State welcoming ceremonies planned at the airport, were tempered by an afternoon rainstorm.
Its expected that Mr. Premadasa will ask Singapore for technical assistance to built low-cost homes and plan urban redevelopment.
The Sri Lankan Prime Minister has just accepted an interest free loan of 32 million US dollars from China, to develop a model village.
Mr. Premadasa will also discuss a wide range of regional and international topics including the upcoming Non-Aligned Conference in Havana and the energy crisis during talks with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew and Foreign Minister Rajaratnum.
Mr. Premadasa will also pave the way for a visit to Singapore next month by the Sri Lanka President Junius Jayewardene which will pay back the visit to Sri Lanka earlier this year by Prime Minister Lee.
