Background: South Vietnamese karines continues to fight off Communist attacks north of the My Chanh river. It's in this area that at least a regiment of the North Vietnamese army has been launching probing attacks against Vietnamese defences as possible prelude to a drive on the northern capital of Hue.

The main Communist objective is a bridge carrying disputed Mighway One across the My Chanh. It has been attacked several times in the past few days. The returning Marines found the bodies of many NVA troops in the farmlands bordering the river, overlooking the bridge. Government spokesmen claimed 192 Communists were killed in a day of fighting, partly in a dawn assault upon the bridge, others in brushes with karines patrols.
