  • Description

The life of a dog in teeming modern city is not always an easy one.

Certainly this is the case for many canine inhabitants of Argentina's largest city and capital, Buenos Aires. Often sleeping rough and forced to scavenge among street rubbish for food, they live -- dishevelled and half-starved -- among the city's shanty areas. For them life is a fight for survival .. and man bare the scars to show it.

But not so the lucky ones ... for Buenos Aires boasts one of the best-equipped and stocked dog boutiques in South America.

The boutique provides a multiplicity of services: a veterinary surgery, experienced god-coiffeurs and pedicure, and a vast range of the latest and most fashionable of canine accessories. And it is not short of customers.

Indulgent owners bring their pampered pets to the boutique to be cared for and cultured. The boutique even has a resident "mannequin" to display the fashionwear and accessories that -- according to boutique owner Maria Perla Veber -- no self-respecting dog should be without.

Even in the face of Argentina's galloping inflation -- 80 per cent so far this year - and the fact that last week the peso was devalued by 50 per cent, the privileged dog-owners of Buenos Aires - together with their privileged pets -- flock to the boutique in increasing numbers.

SYNOPSIS: Apart from a fully-equipped veterinary surgery, the boutique also offers the pampered pet a full range of beauty treatments.. from the most fashionable coiffure through to the most detailed pedicure. And all given with devoted and individual service by the salon's experienced consultants. And although the price is high, there's no lack of eager customers.

And when the beauty treatment's finished, these privileged dogs can leave the salon wearing the most becoming of canine fashions. Hats are in this year in Buenos Aires...

... and what could be more useful to the newly-coiffured dog than his own portable umbrella attached to his own portable umbrella attached to his own portable leash? For despite Argentina's galloping inflation, there are still enough privileged dogs with privileged owners to ensure the boutique's success.
