Background: A U.S. Marine detachment training in the south of France has aroused controversy this week, with French Communists charging that the troops are preparing for a possible invasion of an Arab country.

A company of about 200 troops, from the Mediterranean-based Sixth Fleet, started their manoeuvres last weekend at the French military camp of Canjuers in the Var Department in southern France.

The camp is surrounded by sandy terrain which, the Communists claim, offers similar conditions to those existing in the Middle East.

French Government officials said the manoeuvres were routine and pointed out that U.S. Marines had undergone training in France on other occasions since the late President Charles de Gaulle withdrew France from the NATO integrated military command almost a decade ago.

The Marine exercise is scheduled to last 10 days and a second marine company is expected to visit France for training next month.
