  • Description

Continuing their campaign of protest against the passing of a Bill through Government to ban such acts of political violence, more than 2,000 Japanese students battled with police through the streets of Tokyo June 6-7, causing injuries to both sides.

The clash occurred simultaneously with similar demonstrations in major cities throughout Japan. Tens of thousands of workers and students were mobilized by Communists and Socialists to prevent passage of the Political Violence Prevention Bill through the Upper House. From Tokyo it was reported that an estimated 400 demonstrators and 19 police were injured in a series of violent clashes.

By the afternoon of June 7, the demonstrators seemed to have scored a temporary victory as the Speaker of the House of Councillors announced that he would sooner resign than allow the Conservatives to force through the measure by a majority vote - with the Socialists abstaining - in another plenary session. His resignation was not necessary. The ruling Liberal-Democratic Party decided not to force the Bill through the Upper House. It will now come before an extraordinary session of Parliament to be called when Prime Minister Ikeda returns from a visit to the United States. He will leave for Washington on June 19.

Spokesmen of the militant Zengakuren student organisation said they will continue to agitate against the Government, and may try physically to prevent the Prime Minister from leaving on his U.S. trip.
