    Officials of the United Nations Development Programme have been meeting in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, to discuss problems related to the Programme's activities in East and Central Africa, and the Middle East.

    Topics discussed by the delegates included problems associated with development planning and pre-investment assistance. Technical assistance in such fields as education aid, and major public and social services were also discussed. Delegates exchanged views on questions relating to the World Food Programme and the Economic Commission for Africa.

    The United Nations Development Programme came into being on January 1, 1966. It is a direct result of a resolution of the United Nations' General Assembly, referred to as "Mobilizing for Progress", which welded together two of the United Nation's largest and most comprehensive technical assistance operations -- the Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance and the United Nations Special Fund.

    Before the final session and delegation from Malawi had flown home to Blantyre. The following other nations were represented at the meeting : Bechuanaland, Burundi, Congo (Leopoldville), Ethiopia, Israel, Jordan, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, the United Arab Republic and Zambia. In addition senior officials from the Headquarters of the Development Programme in New York attended.
