Background: The city of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, will be the home of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Calgary is a city of 600,000 people and the centre of Canada's energy industry. A modern international airport will greet the thousands of Olympic visitors. The University of Calgary will serve as the Olympic Village and is also the site of the world's fines indoor speed skating oval. The ice arena, to be used for ice hockey and all skating events, has already been completed. It is a luxurious complex which will seat 18,000 and will also be used for the closing ceremonies. Less than an hour away are the Rocky Mountains, and it is there, at Mt. Allan and Clanmore, that the Alpine and Nordic events will be held. Canada will certainly be hoping for medals in the Alpine events. Calgary's heritage is deeply rooted in the traditions and culture of the Indians and pioneers who first settled in this area. Canada was host to the Summer Olympics in 1976 at Montreal and now the Calgary Games will be a winter first.
