A torchlight demonstration was held in front of the closely-guarded U.S. Embassy in London on Monday (January 31) night in protest at the trial of black militant Angela Davis--which opened in California the same day. Miss Davis, a philosophy professor, was charged with conspiracy in a kidnapping attempt and murder when three black convicts on trial forced their judge and some jurors out of court at gunpoint. In an ensuring shoot-out with police the judge and two of the convicts died. It is alleged that Miss Davis supplied the guns and ammunition used in the offence. At the opening of the trial, 18 of her supporters were arrested--but at the London demonstration, no incidents were reported.
