  • Description

THE ZAMBIAN AIR-LEFT IS UNDER WAY. TWO RAF BRITANNIAS YESTERDAY, (SUNDAY), FLEW OUT OF DAR-ES-SALAAM, TO LUSAKA, EACH CARRYING 3,000 GALLONS IN 44-GALLON DRUMS. THEY WERE THE FIRST OF A YET UNDETERMINED NUMBER OF AIRCRAFT THAT WILL AIR-LIFT OIL INTO LANDLOCKED ZAMBIA. OTHER BEVERLEY AND BRITANNIA AIRCRAFT WERE EXPECTED IN DAR-ES-SALAAM TODAY (MONDAY). AFTER BRINGING DOWN OIL SANCTIONS ON RHODESIA LAST WEEK, BRITAIN IMMEDIATELY INTRODUCED THE AIR-LIFT TO ZAMBIA.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ZAMBIA NEEDS ABOUT 500 TONS OF FUEL DAILY. MORE THAN HALF OF THIS IS PETROL AND ABOUT A THIRD DIESEL OIL. THE BRITISH MINISTRY OF DEFENCE SAYS THAT A BRITANNIA AIRCRAFT COULD FERRY SOME 10 TONS OF OIL, ON EACH TRIP AND WILL MAKE TWO TRIPS DAILY FROM DAR-ES-SALAAM TO NDOLA, LUSAKA AND LIVINGSTONE IN ZAMBIA. ALSO BRITAIN HAS AGREED TO SPEND GBP3,500,000 TO IMPROVE SURFACE ROUTES TO CARRY OIL INTO ZAMBIA BY ROAD. LAST WEDNESDAY MORE THAN 70 TRUCKS BEGAN MOVING OIL FROM MIKUMI IN TANZANIA ALONG THE 750 MILE (1207 KM) ROUTE TO NDOLA.

MEANWHILE ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT MR. KENNETH KAUNDA, LAST WEEK HAD A FIRST HAND LOOK AT THE AIRCRAFT THAT BRITAIN HAS SENT TO HELP AID THE COUNTRY'S DEFENCES. HE CLAMBERED INTO A JAVELIN JET FIGHTER AND WATCHED JAVELINS IN THE AIR.
