The thrust into Cambodia by American and South Vietnamese forces is reported by both countries to have achieved its aims. It has produced Viet Cong arms, foodstuffs and depots... and it has also produced General Do Cai Tri.
General Tri, puffing a pipe and wearing an American baseball style cap, has become a familiar figure at South Vietnamese bases in Cambodia. He believes in getting among his men with words of encouragement and does this by helicopter.
American military heads in the Cambodian operation are reported to be delighted with the way the South Vietnamese have carried out their part of the campaign. They put most of inspiration behind the South Vietnamese successes to the leadership he is generally recognised as one of the leading military "brains" in South Vietnam.
Under the former President Diem he was in charge of Division One in South Vietnam... the area bordering North Vietnam. Between 1967 - 68 he was Ambassador to South Korea. President Thieu brought him back to Saigon and pit him in charge of Division Three... the area near Cambodia from which the South Vietnamese launched their attack to coincide with the American thrust.
General Tri spends a great deal of time flying out into the field to talk with his men and discuss tactics and problems. He is well respected by the American military chiefs for the results his men have achieved.
