  • Description

Relations between neighbouring Mali and Upper Volta took a major step towards permanent improvement last Tuesday (24 June) when Mali government officials returned two Upper Volta prisoners at a ceremony in the Mali capital, Bamako.

The official handover was made to the Foreign Minister of Togo and Niger, M. Avi Houenou Hunlede and M. Adamou Moumouni Djermakoye in the presence of Mali's acting-Foreign Minister M. Assim Diawara.

The two prisoners had been held in Mali since last December following a clash along the country's disputed border with Upper Volta. Both states claim sovereignty over a 150 square mile (400 square kilometre) strip of land, inhabited only by nomadic herdsmen.

The prisoners' release followed the signing of mediation agreement between Upper Volta and Mali in the Togolese capital, Lome, the previous week. The agreement -- supervised by the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity, Mr. William Eteki Mboumoua -- came after a mini-summit of West African heads. An official communique described the agreement as pointing the way towards a complete solution to the Upper Volta-Mali border dispute.
