  • Description

President dawda Kairaba Jawara of Gambia has appealed for more international aid for the drought stricken countries of the Sahel. He made the call during an official visit to Mali.

SYNOPSIS: Sir dawda Kairaba Jawara came to Mali to visit the local Sahel Institute. He was welcomed at Bamako airport by the President of Mali, General Moussa Traore. The Gambian leader is head of an inter state committee set up to fight the drought in the Sahel. The committee groups together eight Sahel countries.

President Jawara has warned that most Sahelian countries will produce considerably less grain this season than last year. He said Mauritania and Cape Verde had been particularly hard hit.

In appealing for more international aid President Jawara said it would be wrong to assume the drought which began in 1968 and reached a peak five years later, was now over. He asked the world community to recognise the plight of the drought stricken countries. Mali is one of several nations the President has visited to draw attention to the situation.
