  • Description

A JOINT JAPANESE-AMERICAN SPACE EXPERIMENT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDED.

THE EXPERIMENT INVOLVED THE SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT OF ELECTRON TEMPERATURES AND DENSITIES IN THE IONOSPHERE.THE MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT BY TWO INSTRUMENTS -- ONE FROM THE UNITED STATES AND ONE DEVELOPED BY THE RADIO RESEARCH LABORATORIES OF TOKYO.BOTH DEVICES PERFORM ESSENTIALLY THE SAME JOB; HOWEVER, THE JAPANESE INSTRUMENT PROMISES TO OBTAIN AND PROCESS DATA MORE QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY.THE PURPOSE OF THE EXPERIMENT WAS TO COMPARE THE READINGS OF THE TWO INSTRUMENTS.

BOTH WERE CARRIED ALOFT BY AN AEROBEE ROCKET ON 28 SEPTEMBER.THE ROCKET REACHED AN ALTITUDE OF 141 STATUTE MILES, AND LANDED IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN 71 MILES FROM ITS LAUNCHING SITE AT WALLOPS ISLAND.

TWO JAPANESE SCIENTISTS WERE ON HAND FOR THE TESTS; DR.KUNIO HIRAO, THE CHIEF SCIENTIST OF RADIO RESEARCH LABORATORIES AND TOSHIO MURAOKA OF THE YOKOHAWA ELECTRICAL COMPANY OF TOKYO.
