  • Description

TWO BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE HIT BY THE SAME TERRORIST BULLET IN ADEN YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) -- BUT ESCAPED WITH TORN SHIRTS AND SLIGHT BRUISING. ON THE SAME DAY A FIRE AT THE NAMASCO FACTORY IN THE MAALA STRAIGHT WAS BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE PROTECTORATE AUTHORITIES.

VAST CLOUDS OF SMOKE BILLOWED OVER THE MAALA STRAIGHT DURING THE FIRE AT THE NAMASCO FACTORY. BRITISH TROOPS WENT TO THE SCENE. THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS UNKNOWN, BUT SABOTAGE WAS SUSPECTED.

THE SHOOTING INCIDENT OCCURRED AS A PATROL UNIT FROM THE LANCASHIRE REGIMENT WAS RETURNING FROM MANSURA DETENTION CENTRE. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN BY SERGEANT ROY DEWHURST, 32, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY INTELLIGENCE OFFICER LIEUTENANT MARTIN SCRASE.

SERGEANT DEWHURST SAID THAT ON THEIR RETURN JOURNEY ABOUT 20 SHOTS WERE FIRED AT THEM FROM AN AUTOMATIC RIFLE. THE FIRST BULLET TOUCHED THE SERGEANT'S RIGHT SHIRT SLEEVE, ENTERED HIS SHIRT AND BRUISED HIS CHEST. THE SAME BULLET SPED ON TO LIEUTENANT SCRASE, SEVERING THE REGIMENTAL LANYARD HANGING FROM HIS RIGHT SHOULDER. HIS SHIRT WAS ALSO TORN OPEN AND HE SUFFERED SOME BRUISING.

ANOTHER SHOT JUST MISSED A THIRD MEMBER OF THE PATROL. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO DAMAGED BY BULLETS.
