Transcript: President Pompidou: Seq 2: "To Pursue the policy of rapprochement with all peoples, to restore at home the taste for collective discipline and the spirit of tolerance, equally indispensable for the survival of a free society -- these are the most urgent needs today. If we know how to persuade ourselves of this, then the future of France is full hope. We are not the strongest nation but we count for something and we are respected. We are not the richest but we are among the happiest. One only needs to look around us. And our country is, expect for Japan, progressing the fastest. Frenchwomen, Frenchmen, have confidence."

Background: In a New Year message President Georges Pompidou last night (Thursday, 31 December 1970) urged the French people to pursue friendship with other peoples and regain a taste for discipline and a spirit of tolerance at home.

Speaking on television from the Elysee Palace, M. Pompidou said that in the past year France had lost its greatest citizen, General de Gaulle. Looking ahead, he commented that the 845,000 French children born in 1970 would be adults in the 21st Century and a stronger, more prosperous and more just France should be built for them.
