  • Description

PALESTINIAN COMMANDOS, WHOSE DEMONSTRATIONS EARLIER THIS WEEK CAUSED A BITTER RIFT BETWEEN JORDAN AND THE UNITED STATES, ATTEMPTED TO PARALYSE TRAFFIC IN AMMAN DURING A GENERAL STRIKE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY).

AFTER A MORNING DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE U.S. POLICY IN THE MIDDLE EAST BY ABOUT 1,000 PROTESTORS, COMMANDO LEADERS MARSHALLED LARGE CROWDS OF STRIKERS IN AMMAN AND CLOSED THE CITY CENTRE TO TRAFFIC FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES.

FRIDAY WAS THE DATE SET FOR THE VISIT TO JORDAN BY UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE OF NEAR EAST AFFAIRS, MR. JOSEPH SISCO.

MR. SISCO'S VISIT WAS CANCELLED AT THE LAST MOMENT FOLLOWING VIOLENT ANTI-AMERICAN DEMONSTRATIONS IN AMMAN, DURING WHICH THE U.S. EMBASSY WAS ATTACKED AND CULTURAL CENTRE BURNED OUT BY CROWDS OF PALESTINIANS.

THE CANCELLATION OF THE VISIT ANGERED KING HUSSEIN'S GOVERNMENT, WHICH DEMANDED THE TRANSFER OF U.S. AMBASSADOR HARRIDON SYMMES FROM AMMAN -- THERE WERE REPORTS THAT THE VISIT OF MR. SISCO HAD BEEN CALLED OFF ON THE ADVICE OF AMBASSADOR SYMMES.

ALL SHOPS AND OFFICES IN AMMAN WERE SHUT DURING FRIDAY'S STRIKE. THE U.S. EMBASSY WAS STILL UNDER CLOSE MILITARY AND POLICE GUARD.
