Hundreds of people have died in a smallpox epidemic in Bangladesh. Some estimates put the total of deaths as high as two-thousand five-hundred. There are fears that the epidemic could spread to the whole country. On Friday (23 February) over one hundred people died in Dacca alone and five hundred people died in the past week in the outlying areas. The Bangladesh Ministry of Health has launched a programme to inoculate the entire population by the end of the year.
But efforts to treat the infection are being hampered by a dispute between Bangladesh Biman, the local airline, and the international airlines.
Essential medicines flown into Dacca Airport by the international airlines remained at the airport because no agreement existed with the local airline for transportation within Bangladesh.
An agreement is now in the final stages of negotiation.
