Background: FRENCH PLANTERS, WHO HAVE SURVIVED 20 YEARS OF INTERNAL STRIFE IN VIETNAM, HAVE BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR PLANTATIONS AND LUXURIOUS VILLAS BECAUSE OF INCREASED MILITARY OPERATIONS BY THE UNITED STATES ALONG THE CAMBODIAN BORDER. ONE RECENTLY EVACUATED VILLA, WHICH BOASTS RICHLY CARPETED LAWNS AND AN ELEGANT SWIMMING POOL, HAS BECOME AN OASIS IN THE THEATRE OF WAR FOR THE AMERICAN TROOPS.

ON THE TERRE ROUGE PLANTATION -- ONE OF THE LAST OUTPOSTS OF FRENCH COLONIALISM IN VIETNAM -- WORK HAD GONE ON DESPITE VIETNAM'S PROTRACTED YEARS OF WAR. BUT RECENTLY THE UNITED STATES FIRST INFANTRY DIVISION LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN ALONG THE CAMBODIAN BORDER UNDER THE TITLE "OPERATION EL PASO II". THE DIVISION'S FORWARD COMMAND POST WAS SET UP IN A GROVE OF RUBBER TREES PLANTED 30 YEARS AGO WHEN THE FRENCH WERE UNCHALLENGED IN VIETNAM. AS THE BATTLES INCREASED, LESS AND LESS WAS SEEN OF THE PLANTATION OWNERS, WHO RETREATED TO THEIR VILLAS. HOWITZERS PLOUGHED UP THE GOLF COURSE WHERE THE PLANTERS FORMERLY SPENT THEIR MORNINGS -- TENTS WERE PITCHED IN THE RUBBER GROVES -- HELICOPTERS ZOOMED OVERHEAD. THE PLANTERS BEGAN TO EVACUATE, LEAVING THEIR HOMES, GARDENS AND SWIMMING POOLS TO THE OMNIPRESENT AMERICANS.
