Background: A packed Rio de Janeiro stadium saw Fluminense beat Flamengo 1-0 in the Rio State Championship final on December 16. Supporters had come prepared with coloured smoke bombs which they let off in the stadium at the start of the game. The crowd of 165,000 watched an indecisive first half in which Fluminense's Washington came close to scoring but failed to put his header past Flamengo goalkeeper Fillol. After the interval, Flamengo missed a good opportunity from a free kick. Fluminense were unlucky when a corner hit the cross bar, but the score remained 0-0. Fluminense's Paolo Vitor saved another attempt before harsh tackling by Flamengo brought Washington down as he powered towards goal. Vitor produced another fine save to foil a shot from Flamengo's Tita, and finally thirty minutes into the second half, the deadlock was broken as Fluminense's Assis scored after a cross from the right, to clinch the match.
