    SOUTH AFRICA TODAY (MONDAY) SIGNED ITS FIRST AGREEMENT WITH A BLACK AFRICAN STATE -- A TRADE PACT WITH MALAWI. THE MALAWI MISSION, HEADED BY M.J.T. KUMBWEZA, MINISTER OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY, FLEW IN TO A RED CARPET WELCOME AT CAPE TOWN'S JAN SMUTS AIRPORT ON SUNDAY.

    THE OTHER TWO MEMBERS OF THE MALAWI DELEGATION WERE MR ALEKE BANDA, MINSTER OF DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING AND MR G.W. KUNJUMANSI, MINISTER OF NATURAL RESOURCES.

    THEIR VISIT WAS THE FIRST TO SOUTH AFRICA BY OFFICIALS OF AN INDEPENDENT AFRICAN STATE, APART FROM A MISSION FROM LESOTHO, AN ENCLAVE INSIDE SOUTH AFRICA.

    THERE WERE NO DETAILS ABOUT THE TRADE PACT BUT MR JAN HAAK, MINISTER OF TRADE FOR SOUTH AFRICA SAID IT REPLACED ONE BETWEEN HIS COUNTRY AND THE DEFUNCT FEDERATION OF RHODESIA AND NYASALAND WHICH IS NOW MALAWI.

    A JOINT COMMUNIQUE SAID THE TRADE AGREEMENT HAD BEEN CONCLUDED "IN RECOGNITION OF THE FACT THAT SOUTH AFRICA AND MALAWI HAVE A COMMON INTEREST IN THE FURTHER EXPANSION OF TRADE BETWEEN THEM."
