  • Description

Italy's new nuclear reactor, named "Avogadro RSI" after a great Italian 19th century scientist, was inaugurated at Saluggia, between Milan and Turin, Nov. 28. It is Europe's first research nuclear reactor to be entirely constructed and owned by private industry.

It was built by a research group formed by the Fiat engineering company and the Montecatini chemical and mining company, two leading Italian industrial groups.

Italy already has two nuclear power stations under construction. One is being built by a state-controlled oil corporation, the other by a state-controlled power company. A third nuclear power station - which, with the other two will supplement the country's important hydro-electric power supplies, - is being planned by private enterprise.

Besides the now research reactor, Italy has a number of other rase nuclear research centers - either in operation already or being planned.
