    Background: FRANCE CORSICA AJACCIO PRISON

Three gunmen who burst into Ajaccio Prison on Corsica on June 7, later gave themselves up after killing two inmates. They stormed into the prison early in the morning and took two guards hostage. They shot dead inmates Jean-Marc Leccia and Salvadore Contini. Police said the gunmen believed the two were responsible for the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Corsican National Liberation Front leader (FLNC), Guy Orsini. Police said the two prisoners were murdered in cold blood. The raiders gave themselves up after five hours. Police had earlier suggested a different motive for the incident. They said the gunmen had intended freeing Noel Luciani. a self-confessed FLNC leader. Luciani is being detained in the prison, pending trial on charges of possessing arms, explosives and stolen documents and of belonging to a prescribed organisation.
