  • Description

A BRITISH MILITARY PATROL STOOD BY AT THE EAST GERMAN BORDER NEAR GOETTINGEN TODAY (THURSDAY) AFTER EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS HAD THREATENED TO SEIZE A FOREST TRACK WITHIN WEST GERMAN TERRITORY.

A SPOKESMAN AT THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE BRITISH ARMY OF THE RHINE IN MOENCHENGLADBACH SAID TODAY THAT ON TUESDAY EAST GERMAN GUARDS HAD SHOUTED TO WEST GERMAN CUSTOMS OFFICIALS THAT THE TRACK, IN THE HARZ MOUNTAINS, WAS IN EAST GERMAN TERRITORY.THEY HAD THREATENED TO CROSS THE BORDER AND MINE THE TRACK.

THIRTY WEST GERMAN FRONTIER POLICE WENT TO THE SCENE, AND BRITISH TROOPS, WITH AN ARMOURED CAR MOVED TO THE AREA LATER.

HOWEVER, NO ATTEMPT WAS MADE BY THE EAST GERMANS TO CARRY OUT THEIR THREAT, AND FRONTIER POLICE BELIEVE TROUBLE IS NOW UNLIKELY.

A MEETING WAS ARRANGED FOR THIS MORNING BETWEEN WEST GERMAN AND EAST GERMAN OFFICIALS AT THE SCENE, BUT NO EAST GERMAN OFFICIALS ARRIVED.
