Background: Mr. Ismet Inonu, Turkey's elder statesman and its last great link with the Ottoman Empire, died at his home in Ankara, Tuesday (25 December), aged 89.

Mr. Inonu -- a former President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister had been seriously ill since suffering a heart attack on December 17.

Mr. Inonu, who was known simply as "Pasha" (General), is expected to be buried alongside his great comrade Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. He will be given a state funeral on Friday.

Small, frail and partly deaf, Mr. Inonu will go down in history as the man who carried out Ataturk's great reforms which transformed Turkey form a backward sultanate into a modern secular state. His first post was under Ottoman rulers, but after World War One, he joined Ataturk in the struggle to establish a new Turkish Republic.

He became a national hero in 1921 when forces under his command defeated Greek invaders at the village of Inonu. Later he adopted the name of the village as his surname.

With the declaration of the Republic in 1923, he became its first Premier and up to his death was still a major figure in Turkish politics.

This library film shows Mr. Inonu having consultations with President Cevdet Sunay in 1971.
