  • Description

In the Unites States, keen competition between professional and unskilled people for jobs -- any low-paid jobs -- is growing.

Reports say the rising unemployment, compounded particularly by the slump now experienced by the car industry, has forced many professionals to swallow their pride and accept jobs which they would not even think of taking in a better economic climate.

There are now 5.5 million unemployed Americans. This is the highest number since November, 1971.

Many Americans -- business executives, salesmen and others from similar professions -- are now turning to jobs such as driving taxis. And a fully-qualified professor at an eastern college is now working as a clerk in Los Angeles.
