Background: 1.- What is the importance of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec project for the world?
Looking at the map there are three main centres of maritime transportation development: London, New York and Tokyo located at the 42 north parallel. Central American and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico are unique, because they are very close to this parallel and to link the two big oceans Atlantic and Pacific one.

The advantages of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec considering the Panama - Canal or another Canal in the zone is:
    a) ship capacity: Panama Canal has a capacity for 60,000 tons ships. At present there are ships of more 500,000 tons capacity.

    b) Because of its geographical position it would save Ship-days.

    c) Mexico has energy resources hydroelectric and gas at the Istymus zone.

    d) The Railway Corridor service would be of low rates from one ocean to another. The cost would be relatively 50 % less than the cost in the Panama Canal.

    e) The capacity of this Railway Corridor would exceed three times that of Panama Canal.

    f) More reliability in case of disaster taking into account that the railway would be repaired in few hours.

2.- What is the cost of the project? in time and money.

The construction of this Corridor would cost 1.2 million dollars and it would take 2 years.

3.- Which Countries would finance this project?
Japan, West Germany and Spain, are mainly interested. It would be created a free custom zone in about 100 Kms. wide that would propitiate the storage of the cargo and the manufacture of products without customs fares. For instance West Germany is interested in installing a Siderurgical Plant to elaborate steel with raw material from Brazil.

4.- How could the Railway Corridor affect the Panama Canal?
Mexico does not pretend to compete nor substitute the Panama Canal but trying to solve the problem of the International Transportation cargo.

5.- How would operate the Railway Corridor?
In each coast it would be constructed a port especially designed to handle containers. The container is a mean of transportation that has evoluted extraordinarily and at the present is used in a big fleet of ships increasing the possibility of a door-to-door service.

The railway Corridor would have the capacity of loading and unloading up to one million tons per day.
