  • Description

THOUSANDS OF ISRAELI STUDENTS AND HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS DEMONSTRATING AGAINST GENERAL DE GAULLE'S FRENCH ARMS EMBARGO, RALLIED OUTSIDE THE MUNICIPALITY BUILDING IN TEL AVIV YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). AFTER SPEECHES ATTACKING THE EMBARGO THE STUDENTS MARCHED TO THE FRENCH EMBASSY TO DELIVER A PETITION.

AT THE FRENCH EMBASSY THE STUDENTS, CHANTING SLOGANS AND WAVING BANNERS, SURGED AGAINST THE POLICE CORDON GUARDING THE SIX-STORY SEA-FRONT BUILDING.

THE STUDENTS SAID THEY WERE NOT DEMONSTRATING AGAINST THE FRENCH PEOPLE BUT ONLY AGAINST THE ARMS EMBARGO IMPOSED BY GENERAL DE GAULLE ON JANUARY 6TH. THE ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER, MR. LEVI ESHKOL CALLED THE MEASURE A PAINFUL BLOW AND ACCUSED THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT OF FOLLOWING A DOUBLE STANDARD. POLICE ALLOWED A DELEGATION TO PASS THROUGH THE CORDONS TO DELIVER A SIGNED PETITION TO FRENCH EMBASSY OFFICIALS. GENERAL DE GAULLE'S ACTION HAS ALSO CAUSED STRONG REACTIONS IN FRANCE, AND MANY FRENCH NEWSPAPERS HAVE BEEN CRITICAL OF THE EMBARGO.
