    ON HIS RETURN HE WAS GREETED AT IDLEWILD AIRPORT BY DELIGHTED COLLEAGUES FROM YALE UNIVERSITY. THE PROFESSOR WAS DETAINED BY THE RUSSIANS AS A SPY AND HELD FOR 16 DAYS DURING A HOLIDAY TOUR OF RUSSIA. ON SATURDAY THE RUSSIANS ANNOUNCED THEY WERE FREEING AND EXPELLING HIM FORTHWITH FROM THE SOVIET UNION.

    PRESIDENT KENNEDY MADE A SPECIAL APPEAL TO MR. KHRUSHCHEV FOR HIS RELEASE. WHEN PROFESSOR BARGHOORN WAS PUT ON A LONDON-BOUND PLANE AT THE WEEKEND ON HIS WAY HOME TO THE UNITED STATES, THE RUSSIANS SAID HE HAD BEEN RELEASED "BECAUSE OF THE SPECIAL CONCERN OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY".

    MEANWHILE, CULTURAL NEGOTIATIONS CANCELLED BECAUSE OF THE ARREST HAD NOT (ON MONDAY) BEEN REORGANISED. THE PRESENT SOVIET-U.S. CULTURAL AGREEMENT ENDS ON DECEMBER 31.
