  • Description

The 40 Brazilian political prisoners released in exchange for the kidnapped West German Ambassador Ehrenfried Von Holleben relaxed in Algiers on Wednesday (June 17).

The prisoners arrived in Algeria early on Tuesday (June 16) in a Brazilian chartered 707 Airliner. They were handcuffed in pairs and guarded by 20 Brazilian security men.

Once free, some told of the tortures they said they had received in prison. One of them, Vera Silvia Araujo Magalhaes, a 22-year old girl had to be placed in a wheelchair. She said her legs were paralysed as a result of tortures inflicted on her during three months in prison. She was one of the four people detained for alleged involvement in the kidnapping, last September, of the American Ambassador Charles Elbrick in Rio De Janeiro.

The West German Ambassador was kidnapped by left-wing guerrillas on June 11 and set free on Monday (June 15), 24 hours after the 40 political prisoners were released.
