    Background: ALAMATA CAMP, ETHIOPIA

Relief workers struggling to cope with the urgent needs of Ethiopia's starving famine victims are being aided in their fight by the nuns of Calcutta's Mother Teresa. The nuns have been sent by the mission to use their considerable experience gained on the streets of Calcutta and other impoverished areas of the world in easing the suffering of the people of Alamata Camp, and in other areas. Their arrival in Ethiopia is part of a massive multi-national relief programme to save more than six million people existing on the edge of starvation. Relief workers say that over a million could soon be dead. The country will need more than one million tonnes of grain over the next year to feed the starving, according the government official Kasse Kebede. He said that although the international community had supplied a number of vehicles to carry aid to the victims in the north of the country from Addis Ababa, the requirements were still 'massive'. Furthermore, another catastrophe is feared as the rains that normally arrive to water the next harvest in the north of the country next year have so far failed in other areas.
