In the early bouts, Japan established its superiority on the mats with some fine displays of speed and precision fighting. In a match against Singapore, the Japanese team won handsomely.

Karate has rapidly become one of the top sports in Asia, with most countries boasting at least ten Dos - places where the art is taught.

As in all karate contests, the blows are never delivered, Self-control is the key word in competition, and contestants score points for Lows which stop just short of the contact point. There are also pos awarded for throws and free-fighting technique.
