Background: Police went into action with their lathis (staves) in Calcutta yesterday (Monday) when a food marched ended in clashes between rival political groups.
Leaders of the Congress Party, many of them ministers in the former West Bengal State government, led about 10,000 people in a march protesting against the food policies of the present State government, which is dominated by Communists.
Police cordons halted the marchers outside the Government Secretariat building, where they squatted in the road to hear speeches. But the Congress supporters did not only have to contend with the police....groups of government supporters came along to jeer them, and soon the rivals were hurling missiles at each other.
Fast police action dispersed the opposing groups, but one former State minister was trapped in an office building for two hours by an unruly crowd before police could rescue him.
