    LAJOS MECSER, A 24-YEAR-OLD HUNGARIAN COAL MINER, CLOCKED SEVEN MINUTES 51.2 SECONDS IN THE 3,000 METRES EVENT. BUT HE WAS WELL OUTSIDE THE WORLD RECORD OF SEVEN MINUTES 39.6 SECONDS SET UP BY KENYA'S KIPCHOGE KEINO. HE DID BETTER THE BRITISH NATIONAL RECORD OF SEVEN MINUTES 52.8 SECONDS, SET BY GORDON PIRIE IN 1956.

    MECSER DEFEATED THE CURRENT EUROPEAN CHAMPION, SIEGFRIED HERRMANN OF EAST GERMANY, WHO CAME SECOND. THIRD PLACE IN THE 3,000 METRE RACE WENT TO WERNER GIRKE OF WEST GERMANY.

    AFTER A FALSE START, THE 400 METRES INTERNATIONAL 'A' RACE GOT UNDER WAY, TO BE WON BY GREAT BRITAIN'S C. CAMPBELL IN 47.9 SECOND. THE SECOND PLACE WAS TAKEN BY ANOTHER BRITON JUST BEHIND CAMPBELL-P. CHARLES MADE THE FINISHING LINE IN 48 SECONDS.

    POLAND TOOK THE HONOURS IN THE 400 METRES INTERNATIONAL 'B' RACE -- STANISLAW GREDZINSKI CROSSED THE FINISHING LINE IN 46.7 SECONDS, WITH THE GERMAN HANS REINEMANN ONLY JUST SECOND IN 46.8 SECONDS AND GREAT BRITAIN'S GRAHAM THIRD IN 46.9. SECONDS.

    IT WAS A GOOD DAY FOR POLAND -- IN ADDITION TO GREDZINSKI'S 400 METRES WIN, WIESLAW MANIAK WON THE 100 METRES INTERNATIONAL EVENT IN 10.5 SECONDS.
